Battling Garden Slugs and Root Rot Naturally

Egg Shell Boarder

I have been having a serious problem in my garden with slugs. It appears that they are only going after my spinach, but I try to grow as much spinach as possible because of the amount needed to make anything at all. These holes began appearing as soon as my spinach started producing pretty green leaves that my family could not wait to eat and harvest. In an attempt to stop them, and to prevent root rot we are using egg shells. As we cook, whenever we use an egg we rinse it out and place it in a...

What does Three Days of Growth Look Like in Aquaponics?

Root Growth April 15

Aquaponics is the growing of plants in water (like hydroponics), with the addition of aquaculture (the growing of fish). As you have seen over the last several weeks we have been getting our aquaponics system up and running. Recently we posted a video of how we put together our aquaponics system and we are happy to report that our cycling is almost complete and we have nitrates in our water! Nitrates are the goal of cycling and I had been told that you will know when the nitrates have arrived because you will see a burst of growth all...

Lettuce Today

I had a ton of posts planned for the last two weeks, but after our oven broke and we didn’t get the garden tilled when I expected, things had to be put on hold. The new oven is here and our garden is well on its way, so today I am going to post a video on how we put together our aquaponics system because I have had lots of people asking how we did it. I believe that the only thing that I have missed in the video that I wanted to mention is that we do not...

Hydroponics is the farming of plants using no soil, but instead, supplying the nutrients that your plants need through water. Aquaponics is the same as hydroponics, except that you are integrating the farming of fish into the...

Rockwool

UPDATE: It has been 36 hours since we first planted two types of lettuce seeds and approximately 24 hours since we planted the one type of lettuce and the spinach seeds. All 3 different types of lettuce have already busted through the seeds and are about to pop out of the rockwool! The packages (that are based on dirt growing) said that the seeds should germinate in 8 to 11 days, so we are way ahead of schedule for the sprouts already! It has been a couple of days since I have been able to post because we have...
