Battling Garden Slugs and Root Rot Naturally

Egg Shell Boarder

I have been having a serious problem in my garden with slugs. It appears that they are only going after my spinach, but I try to grow as much spinach as possible because of the amount needed to make anything at all. These holes began appearing as soon as my spinach started producing pretty green leaves that my family could not wait to eat and harvest. In an attempt to stop them, and to prevent root rot we are using egg shells. As we cook, whenever we use an egg we rinse it out and place it in a...

How We Built Our Aquaponic Garden

Lettuce Today

I had a ton of posts planned for the last two weeks, but after our oven broke and we didn’t get the garden tilled when I expected, things had to be put on hold. The new oven is here and our garden is well on its way, so today I am going to post a video on how we put together our aquaponics system because I have had lots of people asking how we did it. I believe that the only thing that I have missed in the video that I wanted to mention is that we do not...

Homemade Chocolate Shell for Ice Cream

Enjoy!

While celebrating St. Patrick’s Day last night we decided to make it a full on Sundae night at the Mom’s DIY house. After eating our Irish Sundaes we moved on to Ice Cream Sundaes and made a little chocolate shell topping that is similar to Magic Shell or the stuff that they put on the ice cream cones at Dairy Queen. It is a recipe that we adapted from Instructables and only requires 2 ingredients! So easy and yummy! You will need: -1 1/2 cups Chocolate (chips, candy bars, Kisses, whatever you have on hand, as long as it...

Microwave Popcorn without the Cost or Smell

Popcorn!

The reason that I love this idea so much is because I absolutely cannot stand the smell of the microwave popcorn that you purchase at the store in the nifty little 3 packs. I don’t know if it bothered me more after I heard about Popcorn Packers Lung or I just didn’t notice it so much until I heard about it, but regardless, there is a super cheap way to make microwave popcorn without all that stinky smell and at a fraction of the cost. I first saw it on Pinterest and it linked back to the Squawkfox blog....

S’mores in the Oven

Sooooo…my kids have been talking about S’mores. They wanted to build a campfire in order to have them, but we are not soon going camping and it is against the law to burn things in your yard here unless there is food sitting over top of it. While I understand that s’mores would be food, I don’t think that this would be okay with the city. They have also talked about going camping, but it is 43 degrees outside tonight, so I don’t see that happening either. So I decided that there should be no reason that I can’t...

Update on the Seedlings

03/04/2012

Betcha thought I was gone again, huh? I’m not going anywhere. Just the usual here. Sadly, everyone in my house has been sick and passing the sickness around for the last two weeks. This includes the seedlings. Specifically, the lettuce. I don’t know what to do about it other than to just try again but almost all of the lettuce has died. It all just went limp and fell over. I was not happy about this, but I was grateful that the tomatoes had sprouted and looked good for the most part, with only a couple of pots needing...
